Remember: You may be the person’s only chance of survival. Quick action and high-quality CPR can make a difference.

Check for responsiveness by tapping the person and shouting, “Are you okay?” If there is no response, call 911 (or have someone call) and return to the person. If available, send someone to get an AED.

Pulse location: Check the carotid artery on the neck (beside the windpipe). Take no more than 10 seconds to check for breathing and pulse.

Compressions
If the person is not breathing normally (or only gasping) and has no pulse, begin chest compressions. Place two hands in the center of the chest (lower half of the sternum) and push hard and fast: at least 2 inches deep, at a rate of 100–120 per minute. Do 30 compressions.

Airway
Open the airway using the head-tilt, chin-lift.

Breathing
Give 2 rescue breaths. Pinch the nose, seal your mouth over the person’s mouth, and give a breath lasting about 1 second. Watch for chest rise. If the chest does not rise, re-open the airway and try again.

Continue cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths until emergency responders take over, an AED is ready to use, or the person starts breathing normally.
