A for Child Airway

Airway: Clear the Airway

The goal is to open the airway so rescue breaths can reach the lungs. Use the head-tilt, chin-lift technique: place one hand on the child’s forehead and gently tilt the head back. With the fingertips of your other hand, lift the chin upward.

Look, listen, and feel for breathing for no more than 10 seconds. Place your ear near the child’s mouth and nose, watch for chest movement, and feel for air on your cheek.

If the child is not breathing normally, ensure the airway is open and that you have a good head position. If you can clearly see an object in the mouth, remove it. Do not do a blind finger sweep.
