Breathing: Provide Rescue Breaths
With the airway open and the head in a neutral position, place your mouth over the infant’s mouth and nose, creating a complete seal.
Give two gentle rescue breaths. Each breath should last about one second. Use small puffs of air from your cheeks rather than deep breaths from your lungs.
Watch for the infant’s chest to rise. If the chest rises, give the second breath.
If the chest does not rise, reposition the head and chin and try again. If the chest still does not rise, check the mouth for a visible object. Remove it only if you can clearly see it.
If the airway appears blocked and the infant is not breathing, begin first aid for a choking infant.
