Adult CPR is used for teens and adults (anyone who has reached puberty). If you’re unsure which category to use, default to adult CPR.
Adult CPR
Before you begin
First, make sure the scene is safe. Check the person for responsiveness by tapping their shoulder and shouting, “Are you OK?”
If the person responds, CPR is not needed. Stay with them and call 911 if necessary. If there is no response and the person is not breathing normally or is only gasping, call 911 immediately and begin CPR.
CPR follows the C-A-B sequence: Compressions, Airway, and Breathing.
In an emergency, do not…
- Leave the person unattended.
- Give food or drink.
- Splash water on their face.
- Force them into a sitting position.
- Slap their face.
