Review
Child CPR is used for children from about 1 year of age through puberty. The steps are similar to adult CPR, with important differences in hand placement and depth.
Assess the child for responsiveness by tapping and shouting. If there is no response, begin CPR. If you are alone, provide about 2 minutes of CPR before leaving to call 911.
Compressions
If the child is not breathing normally (or only gasping) and has no pulse,
begin chest compressions. Use one or two hands depending on the size of the child.
Compress the chest about 2 inches (5 cm) or one-third the depth of the chest.
Perform 30 compressions at a rate of 100–120 per minute.
Pulse location: carotid artery (neck).
Airway
Open the airway using the head-tilt, chin-lift.
Breathing
If the child is not breathing normally, pinch the nose and cover the child’s mouth with yours.
Give 2 rescue breaths, each lasting about 1 second,
watching for the chest to rise.
