Review
Infant CPR is administered to infants under the age of 12 months. The steps below summarize proper infant CPR technique.
-
Check for responsiveness.
Gently tap the infant’s feet, shoulders, or chest.
If there is no response, begin CPR.
Provide 2 minutes of care before calling 911,
unless help is immediately available.
Pulse location: Brachial artery (upper arm). - Compressions. Using two fingers, press down about ½ inch in the center of the chest just below the nipple line. Perform 30 compressions at a rate of 100–120 per minute.
- Airway. Gently open the airway by placing the head in a neutral “sniffing” position.
- Breathing. If the infant is not breathing, give 2 gentle rescue breaths. Cover both the infant’s mouth and nose with your mouth. Each breath should last about 1 second, and you should see the chest rise.
- Continue care. Continue cycles of compressions and breaths until help arrives, the infant shows signs of life, or you are relieved by trained responders.
